在平面连杆机构中，若以摇杆或滑块为主动件，当其他两运动构件处于同一直线时的位置时，不论驱动力多大,都不能使机构起动。如在曲柄摇杆机构（图1）中，当摇杆主动而曲柄处于和连杆成一直线的两个极限位置(DC1B1A和DC2B2A)时，连杆传给曲柄的力不能产生使曲柄回转的力矩。在曲柄滑块机构（图2）中,当滑块主动时也同样存在两个死点位置（CBA和C1B1A）。 内燃机是曲柄滑块机构的一个具体实例。内燃机汽缸中的活塞即机构中的滑块，曲轴即曲柄，所以内燃机在驱动过程中也有两个死点位置。机构起动时应避开死点位置，在运动过程中可利用惯性渡过死点。
