| 高层建筑 high-rise 超过一定高度和层数的多层建筑。中国自1982年起规定超过10层的住宅建筑和超过24米高的其他民用建筑为高层建筑。1972年国际高层建筑会议将高层建筑分为4类：第一类为9～16层（最高50米），第二类为17～25层（最高75米)，第三类为26～40层（最高100米），第四类为40层以上(高于100米）。公元前280年古埃及人建造了高100多米的亚历山大港灯塔。523年在中国河南登封县建成高40米嵩岳寺塔。现代高层建筑兴起于美国，1883年在芝加哥建起第一幢高11层的保险公司大楼，1931年在纽约建成高102层的帝国大厦。第二次世界大战以后，出现了世界范围的高层建筑繁荣时期。1970～1974年建成的美国芝加哥西尔斯大厦，约443米高。高层建筑可节约城市用地，缩短公用设施和市政管网的开发周期，从而减少市政投资，加快城市建设。
