英国海军潜地中程弹道导弹，系美国海军ａ－３导弹的改进型。１９６０年９月初始研制，１９６４年９月服役，除在２８艘美国海军核潜艇（５艘华盛顿级核潜艇，５艘艾伦级和１８艘拉菲特级）上装备外，还有６４枚ａ－３导弹销售给英国（英国自制核弹头），供装备４艘英国北极星导弹核潜艇。弹头采用三个集束式多弹头，每个子弹重１６０公斤，核当压缩空量为２０万吨。核潜艇水下３０米垂直发射，利用燃气－蒸汽或气将导弹从发射筒中弹出水面，第一级发动机在离水面２５米处点燃。
