根据报文信息自动按规定的路由发送报文的系统。它的主要设备是电子计算机。自动报文交换中心利用电子计算机自动识别报文的种类、优先等级、发往地址,并按优先等级自动与目的线路接通。如果出局线路不空,计算机则把报文存储起来，待线路有空时立即发出。采用计算机控制，提高了接续速度，可实现优先、预占等功能。另外，这种系统采用双机运行，出现故障时可自动切换，不丢失任何信息。因此，自动报文中心能减少局内传送时间，加快报文传送速度，提高线路利用率。
