High precision inter-satellite baseline measurement is one of the most important issues for distributed small satellite SAR(DSS-SAR).

从1972年3月起，新加坡特许轻兵器工业有限公司开始特许生产美国m16ai式5．56mm突击步枪以装备新加坡武装部队，但有一些零部件如握把坯料、枪管等还要从美国进口。为此，该公司根据武装部队的要求，决定自己研制自动步枪。对新枪的基本要求是，简单、可靠、结实，至少不亚于美国m16a1式步枪的性能，另外还要求吸取世界上先进而经济的生产工艺。
在研制时，英国的斯特林军械公司被选为新枪的设计者。1976年初，斯特林军械公司研制出了样枪，叫做sar80式，几经改进于1978年由新加坡特许轻兵器工业有限公司生产。随后，样枪送交新加坡陆军训练研究所步兵学校进行试验。试验中发现了一些问题，如从弹匣里推弹不畅，易出现供弹故障，空弹壳还不能从侧面抛出。改进后的sar80式步枪又送交部队进行了试验和评审，并于1980年投产，1984年列装。 sar80式5.56mm步枪结构简单，结实，机构动作可靠，易于分解结合。
