为拦截江河、渠道等水流以壅高水位，以及为防御洪水而沿河湖、海岸修建的水工建筑物。它们主要借自重或结构作用以抵御水及其他外荷载。常见的挡水建筑物有坝、水闸、堤、海塘等。拦河修建的船闸和河床式水电站等,除为专用建筑物外,也可视为挡水建筑物。有些挡水建筑物，既有挡水作用,同时又具有其他功能,如水闸及设有泄水孔或溢流孔的坝同时具有挡水及泄水的功能。上述船闸及水电站等，既能挡水又分别供航运及发电使用。有时一个水利枢纽可包含多种挡水建筑物，如中国葛洲坝水利枢纽即由坝、泄水闸、冲沙闸、船闸及河床式水电站等组成。
