性质: 又称粒子数反转或布居倒转。在一系统中发生原子能级的再分布,以致产生激光作用。正常情况下,一组原子处于温度平衡体系之中时,处于低能态的原子总是多于高能态的。但是能量的吸收与发射是一种连续过程,不同能态原子的统计分布(布居)保持不变。当抽运能量使这系统受到激励时,分布受到扰动,会出现粒子数反转:高能态的原子数(亦即布居数)比低能态的多。
