河南中部登封地区早前寒武纪基底主要由新太古代登封群、古元古代嵩山群和早前寒武纪花岗质岩石组成。

三国吴黄武五年(226)，析富春县置新城县，故治在今新登镇东。不久并入桐庐县。后数撤数置，曾于隋开皇九年(589)并入钱唐县；大业十四年(618)复置，改属余杭郡。唐武德七年(624)，并入富阳县。永淳元年(682)，再置新城县，属杭州。后梁开平二年(908)，避梁太祖讳改新城县为新登县。北宋太平兴国四年(979)复称新城县。南宋属临安府，元属杭州路，明、清属杭州府。民国元年(1912)废府，改省直辖。民国3年设道，再改新城为新登县，属钱塘道。民国16年废道，又改省直辖。民国24年，属第二行政督察区，民国27年属第一行政督察区，民国36年5月后改省直辖，民国37年属第四行政督察区，8月后又属第九行政督察区。
1949年5月4日新登县解放，属临安专区。1953年临安专区撤销，改省直辖。 1955年属建德专区。1958年11月新登县撤销，并入桐庐县。1961年12月，原新登、富阳地从桐庐县析出，合置富阳县。
