大型个体，体长一般为500毫米。身体近纽带状，背腹扁千头部平扁，前端平切，似套状。颈部较头部细小。位于颈部的前缘有一道横白线，此线的中间部分向前略凹，成弧状。头侧沟较深。吻孔在头端的腹面。在吻后面具一长大的口，呈裂缝状。眼点位于头端背面。体表光滑，无斑纹。身体背面一般呈绿色，体腹面色泽较淡。
生活在沿岸的潮间带，常栖息在石块下，盘曲成纽状。以微生物及有机物为食。再生能力强，在一定季节能自割成数段，每段可再生一成虫。
常作为动物学教学的实验材料。
