经济全球化的内在驱动力是市场经济条件下的生产和消费需求。消费者追求消费物品的价廉物美和效用最大化，就必然要突破各种自然距离和社会人为的障碍，在全球范围的广阔市场上来购买消费物品。我国在改革开放之初，有许多出国的人在回国时，都要带回来大包小包的消费品甚至耐用物品，这就是一种追求价廉物美和效用最大化的跨国消费行为。
生产者要追求低成本高利润即效益最大化，也必须在力所能及的广大市场上来配置生产资源。生产者在全球范围内来配置生产资源，可能是主动的，也可能是被动的。如果消费者没有跨国、跨地区购买的条件或者消费物品不能在全球范围自由流动，而生产者出于追求低成本的本能在全球范围内配置生产资源，那么它就是主动的；如果消费者具有跨国、跨地区购买的条件或者消费物品能够在全球范围内自由流动，生产者如不在全球范围内配置廉价资源，降低生产成本，将被全球性的竞争市场淘汰出局，这时它就是被动的。
总之，无论是从消费的角度讲，还是从生产的角度讲，人类经济活动的本能都是社会化、全球性的，因为只有消费、生产的社会化、全球化，才能获得利益和效益的最大化。（陈嘉珉/2007）
