宝山古石城建于元朝至元年间（1277—1294年）,当时为云南行中书省丽江路宣抚司所辖的7州之一,州治设此,称宝山州。位于丽江古城北120千米的金沙江峡谷,这里是纳西族居住较早的地区之一,也是忽必烈革囊渡江的地带。
宝山古石城,地势险要,因建在一块庞大独立的蘑菇状岩石上,故称石城。作为城址的这块巨岩,三面都是绝壁深谷，东面临江如刀削，惟有南面一条羊肠险道外通,所以没有高峻的城墙，只是为了加固防守，围砌了一圈1米高的石墙作掩体。
城内瓦屋鳞比,巷道纵横,现有住户90余家,全是纳西族。民居群落全是就岩随势,有的利用天生岩石稍加修凿而成家庭用具, 如有的在厨房中凿巨石为石灶；有的把庭院中的巨石凿个大圆洞,当水缸使用；还有的将房中巨石修琢成的石床，床沿已磨得滑溜精光，不知已睡了多少代人。
