   存在于热带地区由大量对流云所组成的直径在4~10个纬度距离(简称纬距)范围内的云区。这种云团是从卫星云图上发现的。云团所经过的地区,常发生大风和暴雨,并能发展成东风波、台风等热带天气系统。热带云团是近年来人们所注意的热带天气系统。
   从全球范围看,云团有3种类型:①爆玉米花状云团 。尺度比较小,多出现在南美大陆的热带地区和中国西藏的南部地区,有明显的日变化。②普通云团。水平直径在4个纬距以上,常发生于热带辐合带中。③季风云团。它和西南季风活动有密切联系,发生于热带的印度洋和东南亚,南北宽达10个纬距,东西长达20~40个经距,冬季约位于北纬5°~10°,自6月中旬开始,随季风的推进,爆发似地向北发展,到8月份,可推进到北纬20°~30°。
    热带云团的尺度差别较大,有中尺度的和小尺度的,也有中间尺度的和天气尺度的(见天气系统)。云团本身由尺度为10~100千米、生命期为数小时到一天的中对流云系和尺度为4~10千米、生命期为30分钟到数小时的小对流云系(即积雨云塔)所组成。
