c3i是军队指挥自动化的英文缩写，即指挥、控制与通信，（c4i再加上计算机）。也就是说在军事指挥体系中，用用以电脑为核心的技术装备与指挥人员相结合，对部队和武器实施指挥与控制的“人一机”系统。
未来高技术战争，是系统与系统的整体对抗，体系对体系的较量，任一军兵种都只能在战斗的某一阶段、时节和行动中发挥主导作用，它们都是作战系统听一部分（分系统），只有通过c3i把各层次的分系统有机地连为一体，才能发挥最在的作战整体功能。c3i的重点在于信息的获取、传输（通信）、处理、评估、选择和显示。
信息技术渗透于各种武器装备、作战手段和作战指挥之中，并以网络的形式将他们连为一体。在海湾战争中，美军和多国部队有效地发挥了c3i在战争中的特殊作用：运用多种侦察和监视手段，实施全面情报保障：建立高效通令网络，保证情报及时传送、联络通畅稳定，指挥中心立体配置。
以数字化技术为核心的战场革命，使机械化战争逐渐退向战场一隅。住处没有重量，易于复制 ，能以光速传播；它在网络中传输时，时空障碍基本消失；它可供无数的用户使用，使用面越广其价值越高。数字化技术不仅上仍较强的数字压缩和纠错功能，而且给整个信息网络带来了高分辨率、高容量和高效率。未来战场，物质能量只有通过信息的周密控制才能有效地释放。作战成败往往不再仅仅取决于钢铁数量、弹药当量等物能对比，而是首先取决全谁能以较为先进的数字化技术手段，最多、最快、最准地去获取和利用战场信息，有效地控制和释放战场物能。1994年4月，美国进行代号为“沙漠铁锤ⅵ”的数字化部队重装备、大编组、高能耗的不灵便。今后，作战平台将不再以非制导弹药、厚重装甲以及提高平台本身的牵引力和速度为主，而是转向追求作战平台的信息实时处理能力为主。数字化技术手段大步走向战场前台。
