Experiment and numerical simulation of the bearing characteristics of root foundations

A new simulated root foundation which can make full use of the load capability of surrounding soil by jacking "root" on the side wall of the caissons is presented by Expressway Corporation of Anhui Province.

To verify the feasibility of jacking root studs of the root type caisson foundation in the environment with water,the test for jacking the studs of a caisson foundation of such type under water was made in the field.

The root type caisson foundation is a sort of originally innovated foundation.

Domestic and overseas anchorage foundations of suspension bridges are mostly gravity anchorage foundations at present ,such as super large open caisson anchorage foundation , diaphragm wall anchorage foundation , this paper introduces a new simulated anchorage foundation style——Root Anchorage Foundation which is made up of by many rooted-caisson foundations .

To study the horizontal bearing behavior of the root type caisson foundation,the horizontal bearing capacity of the caisson is tested and the caisson is loaded by the slow load holding method in the test.

To study the vertical bearing behavior of the root type caisson foundation and to compare the bearing capacity of the foundation to that of the common caisson foundation,the degrees of the vertical bearing capacity improved by the root studs are investigated and the self-balanced load tests are made as well for both the vertical bearing capacity of the root type and common caisson foundations.
