   建立在引力质量与惯性质量相等实验事实(见厄缶实验)之上的基本原理。广义相对论的基础之一。引力质量与惯性质量严格相等的直接推论是任何物体的引力加速度是相等的,它表明引力场区别于如电场、磁场等其他类型的力场,引力场与惯性力场等效。A.爱因斯坦用升降机的假想实验来说明。在这个密闭的升降机内的观察者所做的物理实验都无法断定他所在的参考系究竟是有重力作用的惯性系,还是并无重力而只是相对于某个惯性系以加速度 g上升的非惯性系,在这两种情形,他测得物体释放后自由下落的加速度都是 g,这表明物体在重力场中的运动等效于物体在非惯性系中的运动,或者说引力场与惯性力场等效。由于引力与重力不同,空间各点的引力作用不等,引力场与惯性力场只是在局部的小区域内等效。爱因斯坦在等效原理和广义相对性原理的基础上建立了广义相对论。
