| 刚玉 corundum 成分为铝的氧化物（Al2O3）矿物。因莫氏硬度高达9，主要用作高档磨料。晶体属三方晶系，多呈腰鼓形的六方柱状，有的呈针状或板状。集合体呈块状或柱状。通常呈白、灰、黄等色。若含少量Cr3+呈红色，名红宝石；若含少量Ti4+和Fe2+则呈蓝色，名蓝宝石；有的晶体中含有六次对称分布的针状金红石或其他包裹体，则可产生六射星芒，称星光红宝石或星光蓝宝石，都是名贵宝石。刚玉为玻璃光泽，无解理，但因常存在依底面或菱面体面形成的聚片双晶而出现裂理。比重3.98。产于相对贫硅的火成岩和变质岩中，并常见于冲积砂矿中。美国的北卡罗林纳州和乔治亚州，俄罗斯的乌拉尔山脉、南非特兰斯瓦等为主要产地。
