银盘恒星密集区以外是银晕。银晕接近于球形，物质密度较小，主要由恒星组成，也有少量的星际物质。银晕中天琴座RR型变星很多，常被用来确定银晕的大小。
沙普利利用天琴座RR型变星的观测结果，把银晕的最大直径定为40000秒差距，厚度约为25000秒差距。目前公认的值是银晕在对称面上的值为30000秒差距。
