中国电影演员。生于辽宁大连。1949年进东北军工局文工团（后改为抗敌话剧团），在《李闯王》、《三个战友》等话剧中扮演主要角色。1956年参加电影工作，在长春电影制片厂影片《寂静的山林》中饰男主角侦察员史永光，表演朴素自然。1958年调八一电影制片厂任演员。50～60年代，在银幕上塑造了各种不同性格的青年军人形像，《野火春风斗古城》中稳重老练、机警勇敢的游击队政委杨晓冬;《红色娘子军》中坚贞不屈,富于激情的党代表洪常青，使其享誉影坛。此外，在《海鹰》（1959）、《勐垅沙》(1960)、《哥俩好》(1962)、《秘密图纸》（1965）、《侦察兵》（1974）、《南海长城》(1976)、《大河奔流》（1978）、《绿海天涯》(1979)等影片中都塑造了各具特色的艺术形像。进入80年代,其表演日臻成熟,在《伤逝》(1981)中饰演的男主角,总体把握和细节刻画都很见功力;在《知音》(1981)中饰演的蔡锷将军，获第 5届电影百花奖最佳男演员奖。1987年主演《苏禄国王与中国皇帝》。1988年任加、中、法合拍故事片《白求恩》的中方制片人兼中方导演。曾任八一厂副厂长。1985年当选中国电影表演学会常务理事；中国电影家协会第5届主席团委员、理事。[《红色娘子军》剧照]
