性质：(一)在几乎所有的真核细胞(除了哺乳动物红细胞和植物的筛管单元外)中都可见到的中央细胞器。它含有可遗传的信息(遗传物质)，以DNA的形式存在。当细胞分裂时，DNA便被组织进可见到的染色体中去，在不进行分裂的细胞中，不能区别出染色体，仅表现为染色质。细胞核一般有2～8μm宽，被一个双层的膜包围着，每层膜厚8nm，被一个核周空间分开。这一空间又延伸为内质网腔。核膜上穿有核孔。在真菌和许多低等植物中，核膜在分裂时仍保持完整；而在高等生物中，核膜会裂成碎片并围绕子核重新形成。在核膜内的是核质，核质内含染色质和核仁。核仁是核蛋白体RNA前身45sRNA合成以及tRNA甲基化的地方。某些原生动物具有两型核：一个大核是多倍体，含有绝大多数DNA及核仁；一个小核，在接合时起作用。(二)原子的中心，含有质子和中子。(三)有机化合物中环式结构。
