水晶宫

  以金属作为建筑材料,早在古代建筑中就已开始,而大量的应用,特别是以钢铁作为建筑结构的主要材料则始于近代。随着铸铁业的兴起,1775~1779年第一座生铁桥(设计人:Abraham Darby)在英国塞文河上建造起来,1793~1796年在伦敦又出现了更新式的单跨拱桥——桑德兰桥,全长达236英尺(72米)。在房屋建筑上,铁最初应用于屋顶,如1786年巴黎法兰西剧院建造的铁结构屋顶(设计人:Victor Louis)以及1801年建的英国曼彻斯特的萨尔福特棉纺厂(设计人:Watt and Boulton)的七层生产车间,这里铁结构首次采用了工字形的断面。另外,为了采光的需要,铁和玻璃两种建筑材料配合应用,在十九世纪建筑中取得了巨大成就。如巴黎旧王宫的奥尔良廊(1829-1831,P.Fontaine)、第一座完全以铁架和玻璃构成的巨大建筑物——巴黎植物园的温室(1833,Rouhault),而最著名的则是1851年建造的伦敦“水晶宫”
