所谓武器装备信息化，是指利用信息技术和计算机技术，使武器装备在预警探测、情报侦察、精确制导、火力打击、指挥控制、通信联络、战场管理等方面实现信息采集、融合、处理、传输、显示的网络化、自动化和实时化。武器装备信息化沿着两个方向发展：一个是对机械化武器装备进行信息化改造和提升。需要说明的是，武器装备信息化不是对机械化武器装备的简单否定抛弃，而是对机械化武器装备改造和提升。形象地讲，就是把计算机技术和信息技术以模块形式嵌入机械化武器装备之中，使机械化武器装备具备类似于人的“眼睛、神经和大脑”的功能，从而使其综合作战效能倍增，满足信息战争作战的需要；另一个方向是研制新的信息化武器装备，如c4isr系统、计算机网络病毒、军事智能机器人等。武器装备信息化将使电子信息系统在武器装备体系中的比重将越来越大，相应的作战保障装备的地位和作用不断日益重要，武器装备体系中除了传统的硬杀伤兵器，还将出现软杀伤兵器。
