在各向同性含水层中，地下水的流线与等水头线互相垂直，组成正交流网；在各向异性含水层中，流线与等水头线一般不正交。
根据资料，可以用解析法、数值法或模拟法确定流网。有时也可以凭经验徒手绘制流网，以供概略分析之用。有了流网，就可以确定渗流场中任一点的水头、水力坡度、渗透速度以及任一断面的渗透流量。因此，流网可用于进行定性的或定量的水文地质分析。
