Because of the limit of field and the need of buildings function, the high buildings in the earthquake area can not meet the criterion that "the plane and frontispiece of seismic buildings should be regular symmetrically", so it is unavoidable to set seismic joint.

By combining with the earthquake disaster experience of the multi-story masonry houses,the paper from the layout of the longitudinal cross wall and the design of seismic joints,explores some aspects in the structural system for the seismic design of the multi-story masonry houses,so as to achieve the purpose of improving the seismic capacity of the masonry houses.

According to three kinds of cracks frequently encountered: expansion joint,settlement joint and anti-seismic joint the application and setting of those three joints are comparatively introduced and analyzed.
