2004年3月4日，美陆军进行了自2002年以来的首次拦截试验。试验中，1枚"爱国者先进能力-3"(pac-3)导弹成功地摧毁了1枚近程弹道导弹。陆军计划在今年6月和8月再次进行试验，用pac-3导弹拦截多种类型目标。
在6月份进行的试验中，将试验用pac-3拦截1枚近程弹道导弹和1枚巡航导弹。这次试验中还将引入为pac-3开发的费用减少技术。在8月份进行的试验中，将试验用pac-3拦截1枚近程弹道导弹和1枚远程弹道导弹，一个再入大气层的弹头将从这枚远程弹道导弹上分离。上述试验将指导未来的采办决定，包括陆军计划在2005财年购买108枚pac-3导弹。
尽管雷声公司的pac-2和洛克希德·马丁公司的pac-3导弹在伊拉克战争中成功拦截了9枚弹道导弹，但仍然存在很多缺陷。"爱国者"系统引发了数起误伤事故，而且无法拦截敌军发射的巡航导弹。在2002年的试验中，该系统也数次拦截失败。
目前美陆军仍未公布到底是何种原因导致了事故，但陆军计划投资4200万美元来弥补防空反导系统在伊战中暴露出的不足，包括通信设备和软件方面。
