对信息形式进行加密变换以隐蔽信息内容的通信方式。在古代通信中，已采用暗号、隐语、密码等保密措施。中国古代兵书《六韬·龙韬》记载，西周时期曾用过以约定的物体长短表示某种意义的"阴符"方法，和将一份文书分解成三个部分分别传送的"阴书"方法。在古罗马帝国，G.J.凯撒时期（公元前59～前44）曾采用密码方法。由于电子技术的发展，现代的电通信中已广泛使用保密机进行保密通信。其特点是：对传输的信息在发送端进行加密变换处理，在接收端进行脱密交换恢复成原信息，使窃密者即使截收到传输的信号，也不了解信号所代表的信息内容。
