    基于频分复用技术的电话多路通信体制。属于经典模拟通信的制式  。在工程上  ,一路电话的电信号频谱被限制在300 ~3400赫的范围;考虑到保护性的频率间隔,一路电话所占的频带宽度为4千赫。因此,根据实用信道的不同频带宽度,就可以在一个信道的频带宽度内复用不同路数的电话信号。例如,架空明线信道典型地可以复用12路电话信号,对称电缆信道典型地可以复用60路电话信号,中同轴电缆信道则可以复用数千路电话信号,等等。从总体上说,通信技术正在大踏步地走向数字化,数字光纤通信、数字卫星通信和数字微波通信系统占有越来越大的比重,模拟的载波通信系统日益收缩。但在一定时期内,载波通信在支线和农村地区仍然会继续发挥作用。
