将从发报端传来的新闻电报信息经转换后传送到目的端的电报中转站。
转报站有无线转报站与有线转报站两种。无线转报站主要是为了增加通信距离，改善传输质量，所以也称作中继站。有线转报站是由于通信网络分布的限制，新闻电报往往难以直接传输到每一用户 (如各报社、各通讯社分社、各记者站等)， 需要经过电报中转转换处理，即把从干线传输来的电报信息，经转报站内的设备转换处理后，再经用户线路送至用户终端，以扩大新闻传播的服务面。
电报中转处理， 过去主要靠人工方式转接。 由于新闻电报需要争时效，已逐步由智能自动转报设备代替。这样，收、发报双方可以直接收发，从而使新闻电报的传递速度大大加快,并减少或省去中间环节的人工干预。
