单独海损在海上航行中，由于自然灾害或意外事故造成保险标的的损失，这种损失不是共同海损行为引起的，而是属于单独方利益的损失，这种单独损失由单独的所有人或其承保人自行负担。单独海损的损失是此保险标的本身，不包括单独费用。在英国的海上保险单中规定:如保险合同订约双方无特别约定，则保险人对单独海损的责任要受到附注条款的限制。限制的内容有:对某些货物的单独海损必须超过约定的免赔率才赔，对船舶和运费必须超过约定的免赔额才赔等等。目前这种限制正逐渐取消，因为保险人可以通过调整保险费率来扩大这部分责任。
