为提高船舶抗沉性，利用水密(不透水的)舱壁将船体分隔为若干水密舱室的一种措施。当一舱破损进水后，水不会浸入其他各舱，使船舶免遭沉没或倾覆。如船舶的首尾部易破损浸水，在首部设一防撞舱壁，尾部设一尾尖舱舱壁；因触礁等船底易破损，采用水密双层底结构等。
