前苏联海军在 70年代以前,其绝大多数油、&127;水补给船都是由民用油船改装的,后勤支援能力十分有限。随着其海军战略由近海防御转为远洋进攻,前苏联海军在70年代先后建造了6艘“基里金”级和l艘“别烈津河”级综合补给船。其中以“别烈津河”级吨位最大,其满载排水量3.6万吨,船长212米,宽26米,吃水12米;航速22节,续航力1.5万海里/16节。动力装置为4台柴油机,功率6万马力。

“别烈津河”级综合补给船主要用于伴随“基辅”级直升机航空母舰编队进行远洋活动。船的舯部有3个补给门架,全船共有3个液货站和4个干货站。船上能携载燃油1.6万吨,淡水500吨,以及2000&127;吨一3000吨粮食等于货。该船的艉部还有较老式的纵向加油装置,可通过软管给舰艇加油。船尾部有直升机平台和机库,可搭载 2架卡—25直升机。

“别烈津河”级补给船是前苏联第一艘装备了sa-n-4舰空导弹系统的后勤支援舰;此外,船上还装备了2座双联装57毫米炮和4座30毫米炮等。
