破甲弹又称空心装药破甲弹。它的使用，加强了对坦克的威胁，其主要特点是靠装药本身的能量来穿甲的，故不受初速和射距的限制，是一种发展潜力较大的弹种。不过它的装药很有学问，因为空心装药破甲弹，主要靠把装药制成带锥形孔的空心圆柱体药柱，并在锥形孔药表面加上金属罩，这样，爆炸时即会聚成一股速度、温度和压力都很大的金属能射流，即“聚能效应”，摧毁装甲，反之，如果把装药制成实心，就不能达到破甲的目的。
