约由东峰下棋亭处观赏为最佳位置。景在壑南三凤山崖壁前由两部分组成。其中西侧有一石方正平滑，形如一碑。其东一峰顶有巨石若猴子作蹲坐之态，二石遥相呼应，组成猴子观文约之势。传说宋太祖赵匡胤称帝前与陈抟博台对弈，以华山为赌注，并立下文约，赵匡胤棋败欲毁约，陈抟便一口仙气将文约吹贴在壑外崖壁，并令一神猴守护。久之，猴与文约同化为石。据说游人细观，石上文约字迹隐约可辨。
