彭阳，据《镇原县志》记载：从西汉起，为安定郡二十一县之一。东汉至隋朝改属庆阳。唐时将彭阳改为彭阳郡，后又改为丰义县。五代时属宁州。宋时属原州彭阳县。到元时属镇原州彭阳县，直至明朝废县。历今两千年，现有城垣遗迹，故称彭阳。
彭阳乡地处镇原县东部，辖7个行政村，9869人。面积68平方公里，耕地3.33万亩。
该乡地形山、川、原兼有，三面环水，气候湿润，农业生产初步形成了以烤烟、瓜果、蔬菜 、黄花、养殖为主的五产业。瓜果种植历史悠久，已形成了百亩以上连片规模生产。蔬菜种植推广节能温室、塑料大棚等适用新技术。
农业生产是基础条件不断改善，小水利建设初具规模。农田水利建设规模大、质量 高、曾多次获地、县表彰奖励。
