广西博物馆创建于1934年，1956年重建，1958年定名为广西壮族自治区博物馆。1978年在南宁市民族广场东侧建陈列大楼，1988年建成广西民族文物苑，占地面积4万多平方米，是一座省〔自治区〕级综合性地志博物馆。现馆藏文物5万余件，其中一级藏品150多件。拥有大量的民族文物，是世界上收藏铜鼓数量最多、种类最全的博物馆。馆内基本陈列有《古代铜鼓陈列》、《广西民族民俗展览》和各种临时性的专题展览。馆内的民族文物苑是民族民俗展览向室外的延伸和扩展。本馆在民族考古、铜鼓、岩画等领域有突出的科研成就。
