结构式为[C6H7O2(OCH2CH20H)x(OH3-x]n, x为取代度。是由环氧乙烷与碱纤维素，以氢氧化钠为催化剂，经化学反应醚化而制得。为白色粉末，相对密度0．55-0．75。由于含有亲水性的羟乙基(-CH2CH2OH)，因此易溶于冷水或热水，水溶液的pH值为6．5-8．5，对热稳定，加热时不出现凝胶化现象。成膜性好，其水溶液可制成透明的薄膜。无臭、无味、无毒。表现密度0．35-0．61g／cm3，软化点大于140 ℃，分解温度为205℃。
