现代自卸船的典型卸货系统是以带式输送机为主体的自卸系统。它的工作过程通常是将堆存于斗形货舱内的散货靠重力通过若干个液压操纵的斗门喂入位于舱底的纵向输送带送往船的首部或尾部，然后直接地或通过横向输送机,将货物输入环状皮带机提升到甲板高度,再通过卸料臂上的输送带投送到岸上的接受装置或堆场。自卸系统因所采用的喂料装置、输送带、提升和投送机构的不同而具有多种形式。现代大型自卸船的输送带宽度可达3米，卸货效率一般为每小时4000～6000吨,最高的可达20000吨。
