南天星座之一。北接长蛇座，南联船帆座，在船尾座与唧筒座之间，正好在长蛇座星宿一和船底座老人星联线的中点处。星座的一部分沉浸在银河之中。
传说几十位古希腊英雄在伊阿宋率领下，乘坐"阿尔戈"号海船远航东方，却寻取无价之宝金羊毛。女神雅典娜在他们完成远航，凯旋回到希腊后，就将"阿尔戈"号提到天上化为南船座。1750年法国天文学家拉卡伊把这个范围过大的南船座分划成船底座、船尾座、船帆座和船桅座。后来，因为设想"阿尔戈"号在航行中需要一只罗盘来导航，所以就把船桅座改名为"罗盘座"。
