工业上二苯醚主要由氯苯和苯酚钾盐在铜催化剂存在下反应而得：
氢氧化钾、苯酚、氯苯的摩尔比为1:1.4:1.06，反应完毕后经氢氧化钾溶液处理,分出二苯醚油层,减压蒸馏得工业二苯醚。另一来源是合成其他产品时的副产品。例如用氢氧化钠进行氯苯水解制苯酚过程中，约有10％的氯苯转化成二苯醚，可用异丙醚或苯萃取后精制，即得二苯醚产品。由于氯苯水解制苯酚的方法没有得到发展，故由此法副产的二苯醚甚少。
