性质:一类能产甲烷、专性厌氧古细菌的通称。形态多样,有球状、杆状、八叠状或螺旋状等。能利用氢、甲醇或乙酸等还原二氧化碳,并产甲烷。目前产甲烷菌已有3目、7科、20属、72种。广泛存在于厌氧消化器、污水和其他水域的沉积物和污泥中,也见于动物的胃肠道。代表种有甲酸甲烷杆菌(Methanobacterium formicium)、瘤胃甲烷短杆菌(Methanobrevibacter ruminantium)、万尼氏甲烷球菌(Methanococcus vanniellii)和亨氏甲烷螺菌(Methanospirillum hungatei)等。产甲烷菌在自然条件下必须与其他微生物类群一起完成有机物的分解或污水处理过程,产生含大量甲烷的沼气,因此在生物能的产生、污水处理、环境保护和自然界物质循环中有重要作用。
