朱顶红又名百去莲、朱顶兰等，为石蒜科多年生球根花卉。性喜温暖、湿润，忌强光暴晒。它原产南美热带，但不喜高温，也不耐寒，适宜的生长温度为18-23度。适生于肥沃疏松，排水良好的砂壤土。
朱顶红冬季处于休眠状态，要求干燥，温度9-12度，最低不能低于5度，长江流域以南地区，只要稍加防护便可过冬。
盆栽朱顶红花盆不宜过大(一般先用16-20厘米口径的花盆)，以免盆土久湿不干，造成鳞茎腐烂，盆土宜用腐叶土与砂土混合配制，栽前盆底施些腐熟的饼肥或鸡鸭粪为基肥。栽植时，将鳞茎的1/4至1/3露出土面，栽完后，将盆土揿实，留2-3厘米沿口，浇一次透水，以后不宜多浇，保持较低的湿度，并避免阳光直射，待叶片抽出约10厘米长时，再正常浇水，并开始施追肥，至花蕾形成后即停止施肥(但花后可适量施肥，以促使鳞茎肥大充实)。花后要及时剪去已凋谢的花茎，以免分耗鳞茎的养分。秋后浇水要逐渐减少，盆土以稍干燥为好。冬季应移入室内过冬，浇水量少至维持鳞茎不枯萎即可，温度保持不低于5度，否则会影响休眠和来年开花。
