(传说)南天竺有铁塔,收藏一切秘部大经,龙猛菩萨(旧译龙树)入其中,值金刚萨埵,传受两部之大经,金刚智三藏口传,其弟子沙门智藏(不空三藏之法讳),记之于金刚顶经义诀,是铁塔说之本据也。日本东密台密皆依用之而不疑。安然之教时问答三曰:“沙门智藏金刚顶义诀云:此经有百千颂广本,(中略)其大经本阿阇梨云:经荚广长如床,厚四五尺,有无量颂。在南天界铁塔之中,佛灭度后数百年间无人能开。此塔以铁扇铁锁而封闭之。其中天竺国佛法渐衰时,有大德先诵持大毗卢遮那真言,得毗卢遮那佛而现其身,现于多身于空中说此法门及文字章句,次第令写讫即灭。即毗卢遮那念诵法要一卷是。时大德持诵成就,愿开此塔,于七日中绕塔念诵。以白芥子七粒打此塔门,乃开塔门。诸神一时踊怒,不令得入。唯见塔内香灯光明一丈二丈,名华宝盖,满中悬列。又闻赞声。此大德至心忏悔,发大誓愿,然后得入塔中。入已,其塔寻闭。经于多日诵此经王广本一遍,为如食颂。得诸佛菩萨指授所堪记持不忘,便令出塔。塔门还闭如故。”弘法之付法传下,亦叙此说,终曰:“然前所述事略,载金刚顶义决中。”
