测量人及动物体温的玻璃温度计。测温范围分别为35~42℃(人)和35~43℃(兽)。体温计感温泡容积较小,配以内径很细的毛细管,精度为0.1℃(见图)。过细的毛细管须制成具有放大功能的三角形,同时在毛细管背面配以白色釉带便于读数。在白色釉带侧面常镶入彩色釉带,通过光线折射使水银液柱呈醒目的彩色。
体温计中指示的温度是测量过程中的最高温度值。由于将体温计感温泡上部做成一狭窄的缩颈(俗称缩喉),测温时,水银经颈部上升,温度下降时,水银内聚力作用使水银柱在颈处断开,颈以下水银收缩回感温泡,颈以上水银柱仍保持原来位置,从而读出最高体温。由于体温计是真空型的,下次使用时,可用力将水银柱甩至35℃以下。
