1950年，我国西藏东部的波密地区发生了一次罕见的雪崩。雪崩中，一个庞大的雪体从海拔6000米的高山上崩落下来，越过一条冰川，翻过一道海拔4000米的山梁，最后堆积在雅鲁藏布江大拐弯处的一条支流中，堵塞了河流，切断了公路交通。这个庞大雪体所过之处，形成了类似核弹爆炸冲击波那样的巨大冲力，把森林植被一扫而光。1970年7月24日，我国天山南部高山带发生的一次雪崩中，不仅扫光了沿途的森林，还摧毁了房屋，造成了人畜伤亡。

1968年，瑞士达弗斯镇一次雪崩雪崩是积雪向下迅速滑动的自然现象，它有两个先决条件：首先，发生雪崩的地方必然是倾斜的山坡或沟谷，坡度越大，越容易发生雪崩。平原地区即使积雪很厚，也不致有雪崩出现。其次，还要有较厚的积雪，据一些资料分析，山坡积雪深度30厘米以上才会发生雪崩，雪深70厘米时就会经常发生雪崩。因为雪崩大都发生在高山积雪地区，它是登山者的大敌。过去有的登山运动员在攀登珠穆朗玛峰时，就是因为碰到了雪崩，被掩埋在积雪之中。此外，降水、气温、阳光、风力、地震以及触动都会导致雪崩。

我国科学工作者经过多年的研究考察，已经总结出建筑土丘、水平台阶、导雪堤工程等一整套防止雪崩的方法，有效地减轻了雪崩的危害。
