鳗鲡目海鳝科最大的1属，世界约有70种,中国近30多种。体形似鳗，较侧扁，尾部等于或稍长于头与躯干的长度之和。头侧扁。前鼻孔位于吻上，呈短管状；后鼻孔为圆孔状，或具缘瓣。口大，口裂达眼后下方。鳃孔小，圆孔状或裂缝状。体无鳞。背鳍、臀鳍在后方与尾鳍相连。无胸鳍。体上一般均具有斑带或网纹。
栖息在热带及亚热带海洋珊瑚礁附近。中国分布于东海及南海海域，为珊瑚礁鱼类重要的类群。常见种类有网纹裸胸鳝（见图）。异纹裸胸鳝、波纹裸胸鳝及匀斑裸胸鳝等。
某些种类肉有毒。中国台湾有食黄边裸胸鳝、斑点裸胸鳝、波纹裸胸鳝中毒死亡的事例。
