      天体光谱中吸收线的存在表明,在某些谱线频率上辐射会被吸收,这种局限在谱线频率范围内的吸收称为线吸收。线吸收是由原子在分立能级之间的跃迁产生的。原子从能量为Ei的低能级跃迁到能量为Ek(Ek>Ei)的高能级时,就要吸收频率为的光量子(h为普朗克常数),该频率处的辐射减弱,形成线吸收。实际上,线吸收并不严格地位于频率vik处,因为有一系列谱线致宽机制(见谱线的形成和致宽)使线吸收扩展到vik 附近的一定频率范围内。按照吸收性质的不同,也可把线吸收分为真吸收和散射(见恒星大气的吸收和散射)。
