The paper discusses the necessity of applying double stepped backup rolls,and describes the methods for calculating the contact length and stepped depth and work roll crown.

The existential issues of the backup roll shell after quenched by the power frequency single inductor have been analyzed in this article,which presents the quenching process with pallet car furnace entire heating and the horizontal spray quenching process with the pallet car furnace entire heated,so that the poor wear resistance of the shell and the easy flaking issues have been well solved.
