指声门和会厌一带发出的辅音。狭义的"喉"只表声门,在那里发元音、浊辅音时候声带颤动,如塞音〔妱〕,擦音〔 h〕、〔抰〕等。后来范围扩大也用来指小舌、舌根音〔ⅹ〕、〔γ〕等。等韵家用来指影、晓、匣、喻4个声母,现代拟测的《切韵》音是影〔妱〕、晓〔ⅹ〕、匣〔γ〕、喻三〔γ〕、喻四〔j〕。章炳麟把舌根辅音〔k〕、〔嬜〕等也叫喉音,把原属喉音的影母叫牙音,违反了习惯,没有得到人们的承认。
