【来源】
本品为牛科动物水牛Bubalus bubalis Linnaeus 的角。 取角后，水煮，除去角塞，干燥。
【性状】
本品呈稍扁平而弯曲的锥形，长短不一。表面棕黑色或灰黑色，一侧有数条横向的沟槽，另一侧有密集的横向凹陷条纹。上部渐尖，有纵纹，基部略呈三角形，中空。角质，坚硬。气微腥，味淡。
【鉴别】
本品粉末灰褐色。不规则碎块淡灰白色或灰黄色。纵断面观可见细长梭形纹理，有纵长裂缝，布有微细灰棕色色素颗粒；横断面观梭形纹理平行排列，并弧状弯曲似波峰样，有众多黄棕色色素颗粒。有的碎块表面较平整，色素颗粒及裂隙较小，难于察见。
【炮制】
洗净，镑片或锉成粗粉。
【检查】
总灰分 不得过6.0％ 。酸不溶性灰分 不得过 0.8％。
【浸出物】
照水溶性浸出物测定法项下的冷浸法（附录Ⅹ A）测定，不得少于50.0％。
【性味与归经】
苦，寒。归心、肝经。
【功能与主治】
清热解毒，凉血，定惊。用于温病高热，神昏谵语，发斑发疹，吐血衄血，惊风，癫狂。
【用法与用量】
15～30g ，宜先煎3 小以上。
【贮藏】
置干燥处，防霉。
【制剂】
水牛角浓缩粉。
