分布于我国华北、东北、西南和华南等地区。国外阿富汗、东西伯利亚、中南半岛和日本均产。
体长1.5-1.7米，体重130-250千克。身体肥大 头宽，吻部略短;四肢粗壮;耳被长毛;颈侧毛尤长;尾极短;前足腕垫与宇垫相接;后足肉垫肥厚，内侧无距毛。全身黑色并略带光泽，面部近于棕黄，下颏白色，胸部有一明显的宽V形或新月形白斑。
从低海拔的热带常绿雨林、半常绿林到高海拔的寒温带森林都有栖居。穴于树洞或崖洞中。杂食性，以植物嫩叶、嫩芽、果实、种子及昆虫、鸟卵和小型兽为食，尤喜吃蜂蜜、白蚂蚁等，也盗食玉米、蔬菜、水果等农作物。多独居，交配期雌雄同居。交配始于夏季，孕期约7个月，每胎产1-3仔。
(濒危野生动植物物种国际贸易公约)把本种列入附录I，严加保护。
