现生的皮翼类仅有1科1属，即鼯猴(Cynocephalus)。两现生种分布在东南亚及南洋群岛的热带森林中。鼯猴略大于松鼠,自颈至尾有被毛皮膜相连,适于滑翔。齿式，下门齿扩大,呈梳形，臼齿多尖，植物食性。鼯猴既不是翼手类残存的祖先类型，也与灵长类，如狐猴(Lemur)无关。它的分类意见不一,有人主张归入食虫目，但多数把它单立一皮翼目。
皮翼目的化石以往仅发现在北美晚古新世至早始新世地层中。自1918年发现后，仅有一侧膜兽科(Plagio-menidae)，包括侧膜兽(Plagiomene)和游翔兽(Plane-tetherium)两属，化石极少。但70年代在北极埃尔斯米尔岛的早始新世地层中找到 3种以上的侧膜兽类化石，其数量和分化程度都胜过美国西部。近年中国内蒙古中始新世（约5000万年）地层中也发现了可能属皮翼类化石。
化石种类与现生种类关系不清。有人主张把北美始新世食虫类中的混咬兽科（Mixodectidae）和粗齿兽科(Picrodontidae)归入皮翼目的。
